A large, ugly dog is running around the store getting into all kinds of trouble. When the manager says, “I’m calling the pound!” Opal steps in and says it’s her dog and she is very sorry. She calls the dog Winn-Dixie, and throughout the book she learns how to make more than one unusual friend. Even though they have dealt with sadness, Winn-Dixie shows them life isn’t so bad.
