Description: When we first meet Aubrey, she is an eleven year-old girl from Virginia with a life torn into a million pieces. She is on her own—getting by with cheese &crackers and a fish named Sammy. Before long, her grandmother arrives from Vermont to take care of her since her mother has left and nobody knows where she has gone. Details as to the rest of her family and her mother’s disappearance are cleverly woven into the plot. Leaving Virginia behind, Aubrey reluctantly goes with her grandmother. Not knowing where her mother might be and losing her father and younger sister in a car crash leave a long road of healing for Aubrey. However, her grandmother and new best friend, Bridget, help take Aubrey to places she didn’t think possible. From starting a new school and making friends, to talking with a counselor and an unimaginable choice in the end, you are bound to fall in love with Aubrey. She is real and children will be able to identify with her normal “tween” issues and begin to empathize with her pain and loss. By the end, you will find yourself cheering for Aubrey and celebrating her growth. Just a Heads Up: Mature Content (Aubrey’s father and younger sister are killed in a car wreck before the story even begins.) This book offers many opportunities for discussion.
